The Miracle League is an accessible baseball league for children and adults with disabilities that operates on Saturdays during the spring and fall seasons. Each game day, we need 80-100 volunteers to support our players. There are 2 main shifts, 9:15-11:30am and 12:45-3:00pm. Volunteers are paired with a player and assist them throughout the game. Our League has a variety of ages and ability levels. We welcome volunteers of all ages, but ask those under the age of 14 have an adult present with them during the shift.

The Welcome Center is the heartbeat of The Harrelson Center. Every day, visitors walk through our doors seeking connection, resources, and hope. As a Welcome Center volunteer, you are often the first person they meet, and that first impression matters deeply.

By creating a warm, organized, and welcoming environment, you help set the tone for every interaction that follows, whether someone is visiting a nonprofit partner, attending a meeting, or accessing services for the first time.

Your presence allows Harrelson Center staff to focus on the work of supporting our 40+ nonprofit partners and the people they serve. This role is quiet in its work and powerful in its impact.

About This Role

As the Welcome Center volunteer, you will serve as the first point of contact for visitors, contractors, and guests entering The Harrelson Center.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys interacting with people, providing excellent customer service, and helping keep daily operations running smoothly.

The Data Entry Volunteer is responsible for reviewing client files and accurately entering contact information and records of services provided into the Salesforce database. This position is responsible for updates to demographic information and cross-checking data to ensure accuracy and consistency.

RCC partners with local hospitals to provide advocacy services to survivors of sexual violence. When a survivor decides to seek medical care, RCC staff and volunteers are available 24/7 to support them through that process. This medical care may include a forensic examination and evidence collection, if the survivors decides to pursue this option. (Note: all medical care is provided by trained medical staff. RCC staff and volunteers do not provide medical care, but serve as advocates to inform and support survivors through this process.)

Volunteer Hospital Responders serve as support for our team of direct service staff, including Advocates and Clinicians. Hospital Responders report to the hospital to accompany clients who are seeking treatment related to sexual violence. Hospital Responders are a vital part of the RCC team, and may be the first point of contact for clients after an assault.

StepUp Wilmington's Teen Career Readiness Academy supports students 14-19 to prepare for and navigate the world of workforce and education. Through our proven, targeted curriculum, middle and high school students receive instruction on today's most fundamental professional skills.

One of the many benefits during these workshops is that every teen graduate receives a professional, AI-proof resume which highlights their skills, extracurricular activities, experience, and long-term aspirations. Our teen program is on track to serve almost 500 students this year, and that's a LOT of resumes!

What to Wear & Bring

Walk alongside men in the Rescue Mission of Cape Fear's long-term residential recovery program as a mentor and encourager.  Volunteers spend time with residents sharing their life experience, offering guidance on employment, life skills, and personal development, and simply being a consistent, caring presence.  This is one of the most meaningful volunteer opportunities we offer; the men in our program often say that relationships like these are what change their lives

Help support the Rescue Mission of Cape Fear's thrift store, which generates revenue that directly funds our residential recovery program for men experiencing homelessness. Volunteers assist with sorting and organizing donated items, preparing merchandise for display, and providing a welcoming atmosphere for shoppers.  This is a great opportunity to make a tangible difference while working alongside a dedicated team.

Join us at the Rescue Mission of Cape Fear in serving meals to men experiencing homelessness in Wilmington.  RMCF provides more than 14,000 meals per year to residents in our long-term recovery program. Volunteers help with meal preparation, serving, and cleanup.  No experience necessary; just a willing heart and a desire to make a difference in someone's life.

A mobile laundry trailer equipped with six stackable washers and dryers. Mobile laundry services offer our unhoused neighbors dignity and stability by meeting a basic need with care and consistency. Mobile laundry services are more than clean clothes, they are about coming together as a community to provide ongoing support during vulnerable times. This simple act creates connection, trust, and a reminder that no one is facing hardship alone.

A few hours a month can change a family's life.

Our volunteers are the heart of 2SHARE. In just few hours on a Saturday, you can help deliver furnishings and make an immediate impact in a family’s home.

No special skills required. Just a willingness to show up and care.

Flexible scheduling. Work alongside friendly neighbors. Direct, hands-on impact. Perfect for individuals, students, retirees, or groups.

A typical Saturday Morning starts between 8:00am and 8:30am depending on the number of deliveries/pick-ups.  We are normally finished by noon. The team meets at a local storage are where we:

1. Have our initial team meeting to go over the morning’s pick-up and delivery plan.

2. We will load the trucks with items from the local storage area.

3. We will typically do donation pick-ups first; loading the remaining space in the trucks.

4. We then head to our main storage location to off-load pick-ups and then reload the trucks for the delivery sequence.

5. We make all deliveries.

A few hours a month can change a family's life.

On Tuesdays & Thursdays, we pick up donations and do single deliveries to families in need. Volunteers work side-by-side with 2SHARE staff to pick up and deliver heavy and light items.

Puppy fosters are responsible for providing full-time care for a puppy in training, ranging in age anywhere from 8 weeks to 8 months old. They also help set the foundations for a dog's time in our training program by helping to provide the early stages of their training, i.e., crate training, potty training, basic commands, and social skills with the assistance of our Puppy Program Coordinator, Sarah Kornegay. We ask that puppy fosters be able to commit a minimum of 3 months to a puppy when applying to be a part of the program.

Canines for Service provides all materials needed included food and veterinary costs.

No one is expected to be a professional dog trainer. All that we ask is that you care for the puppy in your home and dedicate the time to help set them up for success early on in their service dog training career. Volunteers like you can help us change the life of a veteran one puppy at a time.

All home types welcome (house with a yard, house without a yard, apartments)

Other pets and/or children in the home are welcome & actually great for early exposure for the puppies in training.

In a founding-stage nonprofit, this role also means helping build the financial systems from scratch.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Work with VLL's financial staff or bookkeeper on all fiscal matters

Develop and monitor the annual operating budget

Present financial statements at every board meeting in a format the full board can understand

Ensure compliance with all tax filing requirements, including Form 990

Oversee the annual audit or financial review process

Monitor internal financial controls and banking relationships

Guide reserve fund and capital management policy

The Member-at-Large: Development & Fundraising Lead is VLL's primary catalyst for fundraising and community outreach at the board level. This role requires someone who knows the Cape Fear philanthropic landscape, is energized by donor cultivation, and is ready to model what board-level fundraising looks like for the rest of the board.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Board Chair is the chief governing officer of VLL's Board of Directors. In a founding-stage organization, this role carries particular weight — you set the tone for how the board works and serve as the primary governance partner to the Executive Director. This is a hands-on leadership role.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Facilitate all board meetings — set the pace, hold the agenda, ensure every voice is heard, and maintain a healthy board culture

Develop meeting agendas collaboratively with the Executive Director

Participate in the board's annual strategic planning process and monitor progress against goals

Serve as the primary public spokesperson for the board

Oversee and lead the annual Executive Director performance evaluation

Act as a governance partner and thought partner to the Executive Director

Cultivate relationships with major donors, funders, and community partners

A seasoned nonprofit, civic, or executive leader known and respected across the Cape Fear region

Prior board chair or senior leadership experience

Strong facilitation and consensus-building skills, comfortable with conflict and able to move groups forward, collaborative by nature — not a micromanager

A network that opens doors to funders and decision-makers

Help support our mission to end poverty housing by volunteering at one of our Habitat ReStore locations, downtown Wilmington, Monkey Junction or Ogden! We are seeking committed volunteers to serve as Warehouse Assistants, Donation Ambassadors, and Showroom Organizers! You would help unload donations, polish them up, price them, and/or organize them on the sales floor. Donations include housewares (furniture, building materials, books, dishware, etc.). Morning and afternoon shifts are available Monday through Saturday. The ReStore allows Cape Fear Habitat to provide household items at below market cost while protecting the environment by recycling items in good condition that might otherwise end up in the landfill. The Board of Young Professionals (BYP) of Communities In Schools of Cape Fear introduces young professionals to the programs and work of CIS. The group is made up of professionals who are interested in giving back to their community, while gaining valuable board membership experience. The goal is to promote the mission of CIS Cape Fear through volunteer, advocacy, and fundraising activities.

Join us on one of our build sites throughout the Cape Fear Region! You will work alongside fellow volunteers and future homeowners, guided by our Site Supervisors. No experience is necessary! We will teach you everything you need to know. Opportunities are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Construction volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. There are limited opportunities available for volunteers 14 and 15 year olds. Tasks may include framing, installing vinyl siding, indoor finishes and landscaping. Opportunities to build walls inside our construction warehouse are also available. Our build sites are located in New Hanover County, Duplin County, and Pender County. If you’re interested in non-teaching opportunities, we need a volunteer front desk receptionist on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4:30-7:30 pm.

Our desk volunteers monitor the door (we have a new intercom and security system), answer phones, check in students and tutors and direct them to the right classrooms, make copies for tutors, and do a little cleaning before we close down, as well as other special projects as they come up.

The position is variable – sometimes it’s busy and other times it’s quiet, and you’re welcome to bring a book or work on homework or other personal projects if there are no assigned duties.  

Volunteer alongside our clients in the garden by planting, weeding, harvesting, and enjoying time together. This is a flexible, drop-in opportunity—no gardening experience is needed.

Give your community the gift of a professional resume! At StepUp Wilmington, we provide foundational job training in close partnership with Cape Fear Community College. Our Jobs Week program is a 32-hour course that focuses on the core fundamentals of being a professional, and gaining long-term meaningful employment. There are many benefits to enrolling in and graduating from Jobs Week, and one of those benefits is that every person receives a comprehensive professional resume by the end of the program week.

We are always looking for volunteers who have a passion for supporting working people, and supporting them in their growth.

Resume writers usually attend 15-30 minutes of in-person time at Jobs Week, meeting a candidate or two whose resume(s) they will be working on. After speaking with the candidate(s), resume volunteers can head home, and email their completed resume documents to our program staff by Thursday at 12pm.

StepUp Wilmington is looking for help capturing impactful moments from across our programs. You do not need to be a professional, or have a fancy camera. Your eagerness and iphone (or similar) will do just fine! 

Keep New Hanover Beautiful’s largest initiative is to work with businesses, property owners and municipalities across New Hanover County (from the ILM International Airport to your local bar) to recycle their cigarette litter. With 185+ canisters needing to be collected each week, this is a huge job for our team. Some Highlights:

GAME NIGHT is held the fourth Tuesday of every month from 4:30 - 6:30 at the First Baptist Church Activity Center.  The site has pool tables, ping-pong, foosball, air hockey, and arcade games, plus a projector and large screen.  We usually have about 40 participants that enjoy these games, plus a variety of table games, and then a rotating series of other activities, such as karaoke, trivia contests, and bingo. Volunteers are key to helping some of the individuals with intellectual and other disabilities to participate!  Our volunteers simply play games and have fun together, helping to create friendships and connections that are so vital for everyone.  

IndependentWorks is seeking individuals who would be willing to dedicate time and energy to our mission: creating a safe, affordable, interdependent housing community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The Board of Advisors and Directors currently meeteets the 2nd Monday of each month at 6 PM - in-person at the Harrelson Center, with a Zoom option.  We are particularly interested in people with legal, accounting, construction, fund-raising, and development backgrounds, though we would welcome anyone with a strong interest in creating both a sense of community for people with disabilities, and eventually an actual housing communty.  IndependentWorks is entirely run by volunteers, and members of the Board of Directors and Advisors not only put in time at the board meetings, but often participate in our regular events.  

Love working with your hands? Help Legacy Architectural Salvage repair damaged donated items in the workshop—or, create repurposed items from salvaged materials! Experience with power tools is ideal, but not necessary.

Do you love interior design and creating beautiful spaces? You’ll get a kick out of staging retail items and organizing inventory at Legacy Architectural Salvage! New donations come in every day, and our volunteers keep the warehouse in tip top shape, showcasing our new salvaged treasures to shoppers. Volunteers also greet customers and complete transactions using our point of sale system.

Though HWF’s goal is to preserve our built history in its original setting, it’s sometimes necessary to salvage our architectural heritage. For homes scheduled for demolition, Legacy is able to coordinate with the property owner to send in a team of deconstruction volunteers to save all they can: doors, windows, siding, flooring, and more. This role requires physical labor, and is ideal for people who like working with their hands, lifting heavy objects, and don’t mind getting a little bit dirty!

For 17 years, HWF has partnered with New Hanover County Public Schools for Tar Heels Go Walking, an educational walking tour for third graders. Each year, HWF volunteers lead thousands of students through a tour of our city’s most renowned sites, instilling a love of history and a deep curiosity to explore the world around them. The time commitment for each Tar Heels Go Walking tour is approximately 9:15am to noon; tours are only conducted on weekdays. Guides must be comfortable walking approximately 1 mile, and experience working with children is a plus!

Assisting food pantry restocking and organizing, building and packing boxes for mobile/deliveries, etc.

We need volunteers to help run our retail store, where we well the items that our kids make. This volunteer position requires greeting customers and articulating our mission, operating the point of sale/register, organizing/cleaning the gift shop, and calling customers to let them know their orders are ready.

Our gift shop is open 10am-5pm and we are looking for volunteers to work 2 hours shifts during this time. 

We are looking for mentors to help in our after school program. This program runs 3pm-5pm M-F during the summer and 4pm-6pm M-F during the school year. This opportunity involves working with teens 13-18 who are dealing with significant barriers to success in their lives. Woodworking is NOT required but certainly helps. We are willing and able to teach volunteers woodworking--what can't be taught is being a positive influence on our teens' lives. For more details on what's involved, please visit our website.
