ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Board Chair is the chief governing officer of VLL's Board of Directors. In a founding-stage organization, this role carries particular weight — you set the tone for how the board works and serve as the primary governance partner to the Executive Director. This is a hands-on leadership role.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Facilitate all board meetings — set the pace, hold the agenda, ensure every voice is heard, and maintain a healthy board culture

Develop meeting agendas collaboratively with the Executive Director

Participate in the board's annual strategic planning process and monitor progress against goals

Serve as the primary public spokesperson for the board

Oversee and lead the annual Executive Director performance evaluation

Act as a governance partner and thought partner to the Executive Director

Cultivate relationships with major donors, funders, and community partners

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

A seasoned nonprofit, civic, or executive leader known and respected across the Cape Fear region

Prior board chair or senior leadership experience

Strong facilitation and consensus-building skills, comfortable with conflict and able to move groups forward, collaborative by nature — not a micromanager

Genuine passion for volunteerism and community building

A network that opens doors to funders and decision-makers

Comfortable with financial oversight and nonprofit governance

Has lived and worked in New Hanover County for at least 5-10 years

A note on commitment: The Board Chair role requires genuine availability — monthly check-ins with the Executive Director, advance preparation for every meeting, and active community presence on VLL's behalf. We are building something new and need a Chair who is invested in that process from the ground up.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN

A front-row seat in building a first-of-its-kind organization in Southeastern NC

Deep partnerships with nonprofit, civic, and business leaders across the region

The opportunity to leave a visible and lasting mark on how this community serves

Volunteer: Board of Advisors/Board of Directors

IndependentWorks is seeking individuals who would be willing to dedicate time and energy to our mission: creating a safe, affordable, interdependent housing community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The Board of Advisors and Directors currently meeteets the 2nd Monday of each month at 6 PM - in-person at the Harrelson Center, with a Zoom option.  We are particularly interested in people with legal, accounting, construction, fund-raising, and development backgrounds, though we would welcome anyone with a strong interest in creating both a sense of community for people with disabilities, and eventually an actual housing communty.  IndependentWorks is entirely run by volunteers, and members of the Board of Directors and Advisors not only put in time at the board meetings, but often participate in our regular events.
