Needs From: ILM Volunteer Hub

Volunteer: Social Media & Marketing Volunteer

Turning real stories of service into the spark that inspires the next volunteer to step up.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

If you've got a keen eye for a great story and a knack for creating content that stops the scroll, this role was made for you. As the Social Media & Marketing Volunteer for the ILM Volunteer Hub, you'll be out in the community — attending events, spending time with Harrelson Center partners, and capturing the real, inspiring moments that make people want to get involved. From engaging reels to thoughtful posts, you'll work alongside the Hub team to build and execute a social media campaign designed to do one thing: move people to act. Whether it's someone signing up to volunteer for the very first time or a seasoned volunteer finding their next opportunity, your content will be the nudge that makes it happen.

This is more than just posting pretty pictures — it's about showcasing the true impact of volunteerism on the people who serve and the community they serve alongside. We're looking for 1-2 passionate, experienced content creators who understand how to speak authentically across platforms and who believe deeply in the power of community. If that's you, we'd love to have you on the team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop a monthly content plan aligned with VLL’s programs, calendar, and brand voice

Create original content — graphics, captions, stories, and posts — tailored to each platform: Facebook (ILM Volunteer Hub group), Instagram, and LinkedIn

Schedule and publish content consistently across platforms, using scheduling tools where applicable and automating as much as possible

Monitor and engage with comments, messages, and community interactions — responding warmly and flagging anything that needs the Executive Director’s attention

Amplify partner organization stories, volunteer spotlights, and community impact moments

Track basic engagement metrics (reach, follows, post performance) and share a brief monthly summary with the Executive Director

Know we are here to support you every step of the way.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Active, confident user of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn — you understand how each platform works and what performs well on each

Strong writing skills and a natural feel for authentic, community-centered brand voice

Self-directed and consistent

Collaborative mindset

Genuine enthusiasm for our mission and the communities we serve

TIME COMMITMENT

We estimate this role requires approximately 6-8 hours per month — a mix of content creation, scheduling, and community engagement. Exact hours will vary based on what’s happening in VLL’s calendar. The work is largely remote and self-scheduled, with a brief monthly check-in with the Executive Director to align on content priorities. More than one volunteer may be placed in this role to reduce the load each volunteer carries.

LEADERSHIP PATHWAY

This role is designed to grow. Here’s where it can go:

Now:  One lead volunteer managing all three platforms in close collaboration with the Executive Director.

As VLL grows:  Expand into a small social media team, with volunteers owning specific platforms or content types — and you leading that team.

Long-term:  As VLL’s funding matures, this role has the potential to transition into a paid part-time position for the right person. Timing is funding-dependent and not expected in Year 1 — but it’s part of the vision.

Note:  You’ll receive a full brand orientation before you post anything — covering VLL’s mission, voice, visual identity, and the story of what we’re building. No content goes live without a collaborative review process in place, especially in the early months as we establish our voice together.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

Build an impressive, real-world portfolio you can showcase to future employers or clients — you’ll be helping build the brand identity and social presence of a nonprofit from the ground up

Hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing and community storytelling — using your creativity for a cause that matters and directly inspiring others to get involved and give back

Build meaningful connections with nonprofit leaders, community advocates, and fellow creatives in the Wilmington area

The opportunity to grow into a team lead role — and potentially a paid position — as VLL scales

Play a founding role in shaping the voice and brand identity of a brand new community initiative from the ground up, with recognition as a founding volunteer of the ILM Volunteer Hub

Volunteer: Data & Listing Quality Control Volunteer

ABOUT THIS ROLE

When a community member searches for a volunteer opportunity, they need to find clear, accurate, complete listings that help them find the right role for them. As the Data & Listing Quality Control Volunteer, you’re the person who helps make that happen — quietly, carefully, and from the comfort of wherever you do your best work.

This is one of our most flexible volunteer roles as it’s entirely remote and entirely self-scheduled. No commute, no set hours, no office to report to. If you’re someone who loves getting the details right and takes quiet pride in things being done well, this role was made for you.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Work with the Executive Director to help shape the QC checklist and review process. Your perspective as a fresh set of eyes will be genuinely valuable from day one

Review nonprofit profiles on the Get Connected platform to make sure each organization is fully and accurately represented — including contact details, descriptions, logos and photos

Review volunteer opportunity listings to confirm the details a potential volunteer would need are included, such as dates, times, location, requirements, and a clear description of what they’d be doing

Give each listing a quick searchability check, making sure opportunities are categorized and tagged in ways that help the right volunteers find them

When something needs attention, reach out to the partner organization using a provided communication template for a friendly nudge with helpful information.

Keep a simple log of what you’ve reviewed and any follow-ups in progress

Share any patterns or recurring gaps you notice with the Executive Director to help improve the onboarding process over time

Know we are here to support you every step of the way.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Someone who genuinely enjoys getting the details right — this role is a great fit if you’re the kind of person who notices what’s missing and finds satisfaction in tidying it up

A warm, clear written communicator

Comfortable working independently and staying organized, though you’ll always have support when you need it

At ease navigating online platforms — no prior experience with volunteer management software needed, just a willingness to learn

A kind and patient approach when following up with partner organizations — everyone is doing their best, and a little grace goes a long way

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE (not required but helpful)

Data entry or database experience

Editing or proofreading

Nonprofit or volunteer sector familiarity

SEO or search basics

Partner or client communications

TIME COMMITMENT

This role is fully flexible and self-scheduled — there are no set hours or required shifts. We estimate the ongoing commitment averages about 2–4 hours per month. Work at your own pace, on your own schedule, from wherever you’re most comfortable.

This role is fully remote.  Everything you need — the platform, the QC checklist, the communication templates, and your point of contact at VLL — is accessible from your laptop or device. No commute. No set schedule. Just meaningful, flexible work you can fit into your life.

Note:  Before you review your first listing, you’ll receive a full orientation to the Get Connected platform and VLL’s review standards. Communication templates will be provided for any outreach to partner organizations, so you’ll never be starting from scratch. And the Executive Director is always available if something comes up that you’re not sure how to handle.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

Hands-on familiarity with a leading volunteer management platform and the nonprofit landscape across New Hanover County

Experience in data quality, nonprofit communications, and platform operations

The satisfaction of knowing the hub’s public-facing quality is something you helped build and maintain

A verified volunteer record and recognition as a founding volunteer team member

Volunteer: Community Connector

The heartbeat of the ILM Volunteer Hub in the community — showing up, sparking conversations, and turning neighbors into volunteers one connection at a time.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Do you love people, thrive in a crowd, and get excited about making a difference right in your own backyard? As a Community Connector for the ILM Volunteer Hub, you'll be our boots on the ground — showing up at farmers markets, community festivals, neighborhood gatherings, and public spaces across New Hanover County, striking up real conversations and inviting residents to discover the many ways they can serve their community through the platform.

This is a role for the naturally outgoing, the unapologetically friendly, and the deeply mission-driven. We're looking for 4–6 volunteers who aren't afraid to walk up to a stranger, share their enthusiasm for the ILM Volunteer Hub, and leave that person feeling inspired to take action. Your mission is to spark genuine connections — you don't need to have all the answers, just a passion for this community and the ability to show up authentically. We'll equip you with everything else.

If you love your community and want to be the reason someone finds their next great volunteer opportunity, we would love to have you on our team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Staff a ILM Volunteer Hub table at assigned community events, farmers markets, neighborhood gatherings, and public spaces — sometimes solo, sometimes alongside another volunteer or our Executive Director

Engage community members in genuine conversation about the ILM Volunteer Hub, what it offers, and how to sign up as a volunteer

Guide interested individuals through signing up on the platform on-the-spot using a tablet or a QR code they can scan with their smartphone

Track sign-ups, engagement, and feedback for each event using a simple outreach log to help measure community reach and inform the annual Volunteer Impact Report

Distribute materials and answer common questions about the hub and VLL’s programs

Select events from a shared VLL outreach calendar based on your availability — no set weekly commitment required

Know we are here to support you every step of the way.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Outgoing, warm communicator who genuinely enjoys talking with people — you don’t need to be a salesperson, just someone who cares about this community who is passionate about volunteerism, our community, and supporting our local nonprofits

Comfortable approaching and engaging strangers in community settings

Reliable, punctual, and able to represent the ILM Volunteer Hub professionally

Some familiarity with Wilmington and the greater New Hanover County area

TIME COMMITMENT

This role is fully event-based and flexible. Outreach officially launches in July 2026, once a strong base of partner organizations is live on the platform. From there, VLL maintains a shared outreach calendar and volunteers choose the events that work for their schedule — there is no set weekly commitment. Events typically run 2–4 hours, and we aim to have a presence at 2–4 community events per month.

Family-friendly opportunity:  Parents are warmly welcomed to bring one child (age 10 and up) to events that are appropriate for youth. This is a meaningful chance for young people to experience volunteerism firsthand, practice engaging with their community, and see what it looks like to show up for others. Events suitable for youth participants will be noted on the outreach calendar.

Note:  Before your first event, you’ll attend the partner organization onboarding and receive a volunteer orientation covering VLL’s mission, a full walkthrough of the ILM Volunteer Hub, talking points, and all materials you need. You will always have a direct point of contact at VLL before and during events.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

Get out into the community and experience the vibrant events and gatherings that make Wilmington such a special place to live

Meet an incredible range of people — from fellow volunteers to nonprofit leaders to neighbors you never knew you had

Be a founding member of the ILM Volunteer Hub and play a direct role in growing a movement of community service from the very beginning, with recognition as a founding volunteer

A verified volunteer record and recognition as a founding volunteer team member

Volunteer: ILM Volunteer Hub Ambassador Volunteer

ABOUT THIS ROLE

The ILM Volunteer Hub lives in the lobby of the Harrelson Center, a building that serves as a gateway to nonprofit services for a wide cross-section of New Hanover County residents. Many people passing through are there to access those services. But many are also looking for a way to give back, to connect, to find their place in the community. The Hub Ambassador’s job is to be a kind, approachable presence who recognizes those people and opens a door for them.

Your focus is specifically on people who are curious about volunteering or who stop at the ILM Volunteer Hub table. Volunteers in this role staff a table near the building entrance during set weekly hours, representing the ILM Volunteer Hub with warmth, knowledge, and good judgment about when and how to engage.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Staff the ILM Volunteer Hub table in the Harrelson Center lobby during scheduled weekly hours

Engage individuals who stop at the table or express curiosity about the ILM Volunteer Hub

Explain what the ILM Volunteer Hub is, how it works, and what kinds of volunteer opportunities are available through partner organizations

Help interested visitors sign up on the Get Connected platform on-site

Answer common questions about VLL’s mission and programs

Keep the VLL table tidy and stocked with materials during your shift

Log visitor interactions and walk-in traffic using VLL’s simple shift tracking system

Know we are here to support you every step of the way.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

A genuinely warm and approachable presence

Reliable

Self-sufficient and comfortable working independently

Comfortable with basic technology as you’ll be helping visitors navigate the Get Connected platform

Professional and respectful in a shared building environment as you’ll be a regular presence at the Harrelson Center and a representative of VLL while you’re there

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE (not required but helpful)

Customer service or hospitality

Community outreach

Nonprofit or social services familiarity

Comfortable with basic tech

Bilingual a plus

TIME COMMITMENT

This role requires a consistent weekly commitment during the hub’s set open hours. Exact days and times will be confirmed prior to launch and coordinated with your availability. Shifts are typically 2–4 hours. Reliability is the most important quality for this role — the hub table is only as valuable as the consistency of the person staffing it.

Note:  Before your first shift, you’ll receive a thorough orientation covering our mission and programs, a full walkthrough of the Get Connected platform, guidance on how to engage visitors, and clear protocols for anything outside your scope. You will always have a direct line to the Executive Director during your shift.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

A front-row seat to the diversity of people and needs flowing through one of Wilmington’s most active nonprofit hubs

Experience in community engagement, nonprofit operations, and volunteer coordination

Volunteer: Photography Volunteer

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As our Photography Volunteer, you’ll capture the real, human moments that words alone can’t carry — volunteers showing up, neighbors connecting, nonprofits doing their work, and a community coming alive around a shared sense of purpose.

The photos you take won’t just live on social media. They’ll appear in grant applications, the annual Volunteer Impact Report, press materials, and the visual story of the ILM Volunteer Hub’s first year. This is a chance to contribute something lasting, receiving credit for your work wherever it appears.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Photograph the hub launch events — capturing candid community moments, key activities, partner organizations, and the energy of the day

Attend select community tabling and outreach events to document volunteers at the table, conversations happening, people signing up

Visit partner organizations to capture photos for volunteer spotlights and authentic shots of nonprofits doing their work in the community

Deliver a curated selection of your best shots after each shoot — edited or unedited, whatever works best for your workflow — shared via Google Drive or a file-sharing platform of your choice

Collaborate with the Executive Director and social media volunteer to identify the strongest images for each use case — social posts, reports, press, and beyond

Obtain photo release acknowledgment from subjects when needed, using VLL’s release process (we’ll do this ahead of time whenever possible)

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

A strong eye for composition, light, and authentic human moments

Must have your own camera equipment — a smartphone with a high-quality camera is absolutely fine and welcome; a professional or mirrorless camera is a bonus but not required

Reliable and communicative

Respectful in community settings

Collaborative and open to discussion on visual style and the specific needs of each shoot

Know we are here to support you every step of the way.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE (open to all skill levels)

Event or documentary photography

Portrait photography

Basic photo editing

Community storytelling

Social media content photography

TIME COMMITMENT

This role is entirely event-based — flexible with no set weekly or monthly commitment. Shoots typically run 1–3 hours. VLL aims to have photography coverage at major events and key partner visits throughout the year.

Note:  VLL will provide a brief visual style orientation before your first shoot — covering the kind of imagery that best represents our brand and community. You’ll also receive VLL’s photo release process so you’re never navigating consent questions on your own at an event.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

A meaningful portfolio of community and nonprofit documentary photography across diverse events and settings

Published credits — your photos will appear in VLL’s Volunteer Impact Report, social media, and potentially local press

Access to compelling, real stories happening across New Hanover County’s nonprofit community

A verified volunteer record and recognition as a founding volunteer team member
