Turning real stories of service into the spark that inspires the next volunteer to step up.
ABOUT THIS ROLE
If you've got a keen eye for a great story and a knack for creating content that stops the scroll, this role was made for you. As the Social Media & Marketing Volunteer for the ILM Volunteer Hub, you'll be out in the community — attending events, spending time with Harrelson Center partners, and capturing the real, inspiring moments that make people want to get involved. From engaging reels to thoughtful posts, you'll work alongside the Hub team to build and execute a social media campaign designed to do one thing: move people to act. Whether it's someone signing up to volunteer for the very first time or a seasoned volunteer finding their next opportunity, your content will be the nudge that makes it happen.
This is more than just posting pretty pictures — it's about showcasing the true impact of volunteerism on the people who serve and the community they serve alongside. We're looking for 1-2 passionate, experienced content creators who understand how to speak authentically across platforms and who believe deeply in the power of community. If that's you, we'd love to have you on the team.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop a monthly content plan aligned with VLL’s programs, calendar, and brand voice
Create original content — graphics, captions, stories, and posts — tailored to each platform: Facebook (ILM Volunteer Hub group), Instagram, and LinkedIn
Schedule and publish content consistently across platforms, using scheduling tools where applicable and automating as much as possible
Monitor and engage with comments, messages, and community interactions — responding warmly and flagging anything that needs the Executive Director’s attention
Amplify partner organization stories, volunteer spotlights, and community impact moments
Track basic engagement metrics (reach, follows, post performance) and share a brief monthly summary with the Executive Director
Know we are here to support you every step of the way.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Active, confident user of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn — you understand how each platform works and what performs well on each
Strong writing skills and a natural feel for authentic, community-centered brand voice
Self-directed and consistent
Collaborative mindset
Genuine enthusiasm for our mission and the communities we serve
TIME COMMITMENT
We estimate this role requires approximately 6-8 hours per month — a mix of content creation, scheduling, and community engagement. Exact hours will vary based on what’s happening in VLL’s calendar. The work is largely remote and self-scheduled, with a brief monthly check-in with the Executive Director to align on content priorities. More than one volunteer may be placed in this role to reduce the load each volunteer carries.
LEADERSHIP PATHWAY
This role is designed to grow. Here’s where it can go:
Now: One lead volunteer managing all three platforms in close collaboration with the Executive Director.
As VLL grows: Expand into a small social media team, with volunteers owning specific platforms or content types — and you leading that team.
Long-term: As VLL’s funding matures, this role has the potential to transition into a paid part-time position for the right person. Timing is funding-dependent and not expected in Year 1 — but it’s part of the vision.
Note: You’ll receive a full brand orientation before you post anything — covering VLL’s mission, voice, visual identity, and the story of what we’re building. No content goes live without a collaborative review process in place, especially in the early months as we establish our voice together.
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN
Build an impressive, real-world portfolio you can showcase to future employers or clients — you’ll be helping build the brand identity and social presence of a nonprofit from the ground up
Hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing and community storytelling — using your creativity for a cause that matters and directly inspiring others to get involved and give back
Build meaningful connections with nonprofit leaders, community advocates, and fellow creatives in the Wilmington area
The opportunity to grow into a team lead role — and potentially a paid position — as VLL scales
Play a founding role in shaping the voice and brand identity of a brand new community initiative from the ground up, with recognition as a founding volunteer of the ILM Volunteer Hub
