ABOUT THIS ROLE The Board Chair is the chief governing officer of VLL's Board of Directors. In a founding-stage organization, this role carries particular weight — you set the tone for how the board works and serve as the primary governance partner to the Executive Director. This is a hands-on leadership role. WHAT YOU'LL DO Facilitate all board meetings — set the pace, hold the agenda, ensure every voice is heard, and maintain a healthy board culture Develop meeting agendas collaboratively with the Executive Director Participate in the board's annual strategic planning process and monitor progress against goals Serve as the primary public spokesperson for the board Oversee and lead the annual Executive Director performance evaluation Act as a governance partner and thought partner to the Executive Director Cultivate relationships with major donors, funders, and community partners WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR A seasoned nonprofit, civic, or executive leader known and respected across the Cape Fear region Prior board chair or senior leadership experience Strong facilitation and consensus-building skills, comfortable with conflict and able to move groups forward, collaborative by nature — not a micromanager Genuine passion for volunteerism and community building A network that opens doors to funders and decision-makers Comfortable with financial oversight and nonprofit governance Has lived and worked in New Hanover County for at least 5-10 years WHAT YOU'LL GAIN A front-row seat in building a first-of-its-kind organization in Southeastern NC Deep partnerships with nonprofit, civic, and business leaders across the region The opportunity to leave a visible and lasting mark on how this community serves Recognition as a founding board leader of The Volunteer Leadership Lab
