ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Vice Chair is the Board Chair's right hand and VLL's governance lead. In addition to stepping in for the Chair when needed, this role owns the board's most important long-term asset: its own health.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Act as primary backup when the Chair is unavailable — assume all Chair duties as needed
Lead board recruitment, screening, and succession planning
Manage board member onboarding and orientation for incoming directors
Monitor board member engagement and track terms, renewals, and class rotations
Coordinate the annual board self-evaluation process
Lead emergency and long-term ED succession planning in partnership with the full board
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Experience with governance, organizational leadership, or nonprofit board service
A strategic thinker with an eye for talent and fit
Process-oriented and reliable — someone who follows through on commitments
Comfortable leading recruitment conversations and navigating difficult ones
Respected in our professional and civic community
Has lived and worked in New Hanover County for at least 5-10 years
