Description

Why It's Important

The front desk is the heartbeat of The Harrelson Center. Every day, visitors walk through our doors seeking connection, resources, and hope. As a Receptionist Volunteer, you are often the first person they meet, and that first impression matters deeply.

By creating a warm, organized, and welcoming environment, you help set the tone for every interaction that follows, whether someone is visiting a nonprofit partner, attending a meeting, or accessing services for the first time.

Your presence allows Harrelson Center staff to focus on the work of supporting our 40+ nonprofit partners and the people they serve. This role is quiet in its work and powerful in its impact.

About This Role

As the Harrelson Center Receptionist, you will serve as the first point of contact for visitors, contractors, and guests entering The Harrelson Center.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys interacting with people, providing excellent customer service, and helping keep daily operations running smoothly.

What You'll Do

  • Greet and welcome visitors and direct them to their destinations.
  • Answer questions about The Harrelson Center and its nonprofit partners.
  • Answer phones and direct calls appropriately.
  • Take and relay messages as needed.
  • Perform basic filing and clerical duties.
  • Distribute outreach information.
  • Keep lobby clean, organized, and welcoming.
  • Provide light housekeeping in the main lobby.

What You'll Gain

Volunteering as a Receptionist at The Harrelson Center is more than front desk support. It's a front-row seat to one of Wilmington's most dynamic nonprofit communities.

Broad nonprofit exposure: You'll interact with staff and visitors from across our network of 40+ partner organizations working in areas from housing and food security to youth enrichment and crisis response.

Professional skill-building: Strengthen your communication, customer service, and administrative skills in a real-world professional environment.

Community connection: Build meaningful relationships with Harrelson Center staff, nonprofit partners, and the broader Cape Fear community.

Firsthand mission experience: See the direct impact of The Harrelson Center's work every shift, and know that your presence made it possible.

Flexible, rewarding service: Contribute your time in a consistent, manageable role that fits your schedule while making a tangible difference.

Training and orientation will be provided to ensure you feel comfortable and prepared for your role.
