Description

The heartbeat of the ILM Volunteer Hub in the community — showing up, sparking conversations, and turning neighbors into volunteers one connection at a time.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Do you love people, thrive in a crowd, and get excited about making a difference right in your own backyard? As a Community Connector for the ILM Volunteer Hub, you'll be our boots on the ground — showing up at farmers markets, community festivals, neighborhood gatherings, and public spaces across New Hanover County, striking up real conversations and inviting residents to discover the many ways they can serve their community through the platform.

This is a role for the naturally outgoing, the unapologetically friendly, and the deeply mission-driven. We're looking for 4–6 volunteers who aren't afraid to walk up to a stranger, share their enthusiasm for the ILM Volunteer Hub, and leave that person feeling inspired to take action. Your mission is to spark genuine connections — you don't need to have all the answers, just a passion for this community and the ability to show up authentically. We'll equip you with everything else.

If you love your community and want to be the reason someone finds their next great volunteer opportunity, we would love to have you on our team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Staff a ILM Volunteer Hub table at assigned community events, farmers markets, neighborhood gatherings, and public spaces — sometimes solo, sometimes alongside another volunteer or our Executive Director

  • Engage community members in genuine conversation about the ILM Volunteer Hub, what it offers, and how to sign up as a volunteer

  • Guide interested individuals through signing up on the platform on-the-spot using a tablet or a QR code they can scan with their smartphone

  • Track sign-ups, engagement, and feedback for each event using a simple outreach log to help measure community reach and inform the annual Volunteer Impact Report

  • Distribute materials and answer common questions about the hub and VLL’s programs

  • Select events from a shared VLL outreach calendar based on your availability — no set weekly commitment required

Know we are here to support you every step of the way.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Outgoing, warm communicator who genuinely enjoys talking with people — you don’t need to be a salesperson, just someone who cares about this community who is passionate about volunteerism, our community, and supporting our local nonprofits

  • Comfortable approaching and engaging strangers in community settings

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to represent the ILM Volunteer Hub professionally

  • Some familiarity with Wilmington and the greater New Hanover County area

TIME COMMITMENT

This role is fully event-based and flexible. Outreach officially launches in July 2026, once a strong base of partner organizations is live on the platform. From there, VLL maintains a shared outreach calendar and volunteers choose the events that work for their schedule — there is no set weekly commitment. Events typically run 2–4 hours, and we aim to have a presence at 2–4 community events per month.

Family-friendly opportunity:  Parents are warmly welcomed to bring one child (age 10 and up) to events that are appropriate for youth. This is a meaningful chance for young people to experience volunteerism firsthand, practice engaging with their community, and see what it looks like to show up for others. Events suitable for youth participants will be noted on the outreach calendar.

Note:  Before your first event, you’ll attend the partner organization onboarding and receive a volunteer orientation covering VLL’s mission, a full walkthrough of the ILM Volunteer Hub, talking points, and all materials you need. You will always have a direct point of contact at VLL before and during events.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

  • Get out into the community and experience the vibrant events and gatherings that make Wilmington such a special place to live

  • Meet an incredible range of people — from fellow volunteers to nonprofit leaders to neighbors you never knew you had

  • Be a founding member of the ILM Volunteer Hub and play a direct role in growing a movement of community service from the very beginning, with recognition as a founding volunteer

  • A verified volunteer record and recognition as a founding volunteer team member
