ABOUT THIS ROLE
As our Photography Volunteer, you’ll capture the real, human moments that words alone can’t carry — volunteers showing up, neighbors connecting, nonprofits doing their work, and a community coming alive around a shared sense of purpose.
The photos you take won’t just live on social media. They’ll appear in grant applications, the annual Volunteer Impact Report, press materials, and the visual story of the ILM Volunteer Hub’s first year. This is a chance to contribute something lasting, receiving credit for your work wherever it appears.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Photograph the hub launch events — capturing candid community moments, key activities, partner organizations, and the energy of the day
Attend select community tabling and outreach events to document volunteers at the table, conversations happening, people signing up
Visit partner organizations to capture photos for volunteer spotlights and authentic shots of nonprofits doing their work in the community
Deliver a curated selection of your best shots after each shoot — edited or unedited, whatever works best for your workflow — shared via Google Drive or a file-sharing platform of your choice
Collaborate with the Executive Director and social media volunteer to identify the strongest images for each use case — social posts, reports, press, and beyond
Obtain photo release acknowledgment from subjects when needed, using VLL’s release process (we’ll do this ahead of time whenever possible)
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
A strong eye for composition, light, and authentic human moments
Must have your own camera equipment — a smartphone with a high-quality camera is absolutely fine and welcome; a professional or mirrorless camera is a bonus but not required
Reliable and communicative
Respectful in community settings
Collaborative and open to discussion on visual style and the specific needs of each shoot
Know we are here to support you every step of the way.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE (open to all skill levels)
TIME COMMITMENT
This role is entirely event-based — flexible with no set weekly or monthly commitment. Shoots typically run 1–3 hours. VLL aims to have photography coverage at major events and key partner visits throughout the year.
Note: VLL will provide a brief visual style orientation before your first shoot — covering the kind of imagery that best represents our brand and community. You’ll also receive VLL’s photo release process so you’re never navigating consent questions on your own at an event.
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN
A meaningful portfolio of community and nonprofit documentary photography across diverse events and settings
Published credits — your photos will appear in VLL’s Volunteer Impact Report, social media, and potentially local press
Access to compelling, real stories happening across New Hanover County’s nonprofit community
A verified volunteer record and recognition as a founding volunteer team member
